Chubby Group is taking a significant step toward expanding its national restaurant presence through a proposed $100 million transaction with GEN Restaurant Group. The agreement covers operations at 47 GEN Korean BBQ restaurants across the United States, with a planned transition in four phases over 12 months. Approved unanimously by GEN’s Board of Directors, the transaction would allow Chubby Group to expand through an established restaurant network while GEN shifts its focus toward its Korean consumer-packaged goods business. The transaction remains subject to final agreements and required approvals.
For Chubby Group, this agreement represents a new approach to accelerating growth. With more than 70 existing restaurants across over 25 brands, including Chubby Cattle, Wagyu House, The X Pot, and NIKU X, the company has built its hospitality platform around premium ingredients, innovative dining experiences, and operational integration. The proposed acquisition creates an opportunity to bring Chubby Group’s wagyu-focused offerings and hospitality expertise to established Korean barbecue locations, strengthening its national presence while building on the dining experiences customers already recognize.
The larger business lesson is that scaling a restaurant group requires more than opening new locations. Acquisitions can accelerate expansion, but long-term success depends on integration, operational consistency, and the ability to improve the guest experience across an established network. For Chubby Group, this agreement represents an opportunity to combine the advantages of an existing restaurant footprint with a premium hospitality strategy, creating a stronger foundation for sustainable national growth.
