Chubby Cattle Group is preparing for one of its most significant expansion milestones following a $100 million agreement to acquire 47 GEN Korean BBQ restaurants across the United States. First announced as a potential transaction in August, the deal moved forward in October after GEN Restaurant Group’s board approved the transaction and the companies signed a binding letter of intent. The proposed acquisition would add an established network of Korean barbecue restaurants to Chubby Group’s growing portfolio, which currently includes approximately 70 locations across more than 25 restaurant brands, including Chubby Cattle, Wagyu House, NIKU X, and The X Pot.
For Chubby Group, the acquisition represents an opportunity to accelerate national expansion while building on an established restaurant network. Co-founder David Zhao emphasized the value of acquiring high-traffic locations and enhancing the Korean barbecue experience customers already recognize through a more wagyu-focused menu. The company’s approach to restaurant development, including its investment in supply-chain ownership and in-house store design and construction, provides a foundation for integrating additional locations while maintaining operational consistency and premium dining standards.
The broader business takeaway is that meaningful restaurant growth requires more than opening new locations. Strategic acquisitions can accelerate market penetration, but their long-term value depends on disciplined integration, operational efficiency, and the ability to deliver a consistent customer experience. For Chubby Group, this proposed transaction represents an important step toward building a larger national hospitality platform, combining established restaurant operations with a long-term vision centered on premium ingredients, innovative dining concepts, and sustainable growth.
