Chubby Group is taking a major step toward expanding its national restaurant footprint through a proposed $100 million acquisition of 47 GEN Korean BBQ restaurants. The agreement, announced on October 14, 2026, would significantly increase the company’s presence across the United States. Already operating approximately 70 restaurants across more than 25 brands, including Chubby Cattle, NIKU X, Wagyu House, and The X Pot, Chubby Group is preparing to build on an established Korean barbecue network while GEN Restaurant Group transitions its focus toward consumer packaged goods.
For Chubby Group, the proposed acquisition represents an opportunity to accelerate growth while bringing its approach to premium dining, operational innovation, and hospitality to a broader audience. Rather than building every new restaurant from the ground up, the company can expand through existing locations with established customer bases. David Zhao, co-founder of Chubby Group, emphasized the opportunity to build on the Korean barbecue experience that GEN customers already know while introducing a more wagyu-focused menu. The planned transition reflects the group’s commitment to combining strategic expansion with disciplined execution and a consistent guest experience.
The larger business takeaway is that scaling a restaurant company requires more than increasing its location count. Long-term growth depends on strengthening operations, integrating teams, maintaining product quality, and creating experiences that customers continue to value. For Chubby Group, this agreement represents a potential turning point in its development as a national hospitality platform, bringing together an established restaurant network and a growth strategy centered on premium ingredients, operational efficiency, and memorable dining experiences.
