Chubby Group is preparing for one of its most significant expansion opportunities through a proposed $100 million transaction involving 47 GEN Korean BBQ restaurants across the United States. GEN Restaurant Group has signed a binding letter of intent, unanimously approved by its board, outlining a four-phase operational transition over 12 months. Under the proposed agreement, Chubby Group would assume restaurant operations and related lease obligations while introducing wagyu-focused menus and investing in restaurant improvements. GEN would retain ownership of its brand and consumer packaged goods business.
For Chubby Group, the agreement represents an opportunity to accelerate national expansion through an established restaurant network rather than relying solely on new openings. With more than 70 restaurants across over 25 brands, including Chubby Cattle, Wagyu House, NIKU X, and The X Pot, the company has developed a hospitality portfolio centered on premium ingredients, differentiated dining experiences, and operational innovation. Integrating GEN’s restaurant operations would create an opportunity to bring Chubby Group’s wagyu-focused approach to a broader customer base while building on the Korean barbecue experience guests already know.
The larger business insight is that acquisitions can accelerate growth, but successful integration determines whether that growth creates lasting value. Expanding through an established restaurant network requires disciplined execution, operational consistency, and a clear strategy for improving the guest experience. For Chubby Group, the proposed transaction represents more than a significant increase in restaurant count. It creates an opportunity to strengthen its nationwide hospitality platform, expand its customer reach, and demonstrate how premium dining concepts can scale through strategic partnerships and operational excellence.
