GEN Restaurant Group has signed a binding letter of intent to sell operations at 47 U.S. restaurants to Chubby Group in a proposed $100 million transaction. Unanimously approved by GEN’s board of directors, the agreement outlines a phased transition over 12 months, with both companies initially targeting a closing within 30 days of the announcement. GEN will retain ownership of its brand, consumer packaged goods business, and approximately three restaurants. The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals, required transfers, and definitive agreements.
For Chubby Group, the proposed acquisition represents an opportunity to accelerate national expansion through an established network of restaurants rather than relying solely on new openings. Already operating more than 70 locations across over 25 brands, including Chubby Cattle, Wagyu House, The X Pot, and NIKU X, the company continues building a hospitality portfolio centered on premium dining, innovation, and operational efficiency. Integrating the 47 restaurants would provide an opportunity to expand Chubby Group’s geographic reach while introducing its approach to premium ingredients, restaurant operations, and guest experiences across additional markets.
The broader business lesson is that restaurant growth requires more than opening new locations. Acquiring an established operating network creates opportunities for scale, but long-term success depends on integration, consistency, and execution. For Chubby Group, the proposed transaction represents a potential milestone in its evolution into a larger national hospitality platform, where operational infrastructure, differentiated dining concepts, and customer experience work together to support sustainable growth.
